There are 3 ways to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics:

FIBA 3x3 FEDERATION RANKING

Cut-off date: November 1, 2019

Number of teams selected: 4 per gender selected as follows:

  1. The 4 highest placed countries per gender in the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking
  2. Unless neither of the Japanese teams are in the Top 4 in the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking, in which case the highest ranked Japanese national team qualifies directly (if men and women have the same rank, preference is given to women)
  3. Additionally, a maximum of 2 teams per gender can come from the same continent.

OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT (OQT)

Date: May 2020 (exact date and location tbc)

Number of teams: 20 per gender selected as follows:

  1. The Host NOC of the OQT, if not yet qualified in the corresponding gender for the Olympics directly based on the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking on November 1, 2019
  2. The 3 medalists (in each gender) of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2019 (if not yet qualified for the Olympics directly and based on the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking on November 1, 2019).
  3. The 16 (or more, if Host NOC of the OQT and/or some of the World Cup 2019 medalists already qualified for the Olympics) highest ranked NOCs in the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking List of November 1, 2019 not yet qualified to the Olympic Games through the Federation Ranking List (including in any case Japan if not yet qualified in the corresponding gender)
  4. Subject to the last 10 berths in each gender will be allocated following the Federation Ranking List only if the respective NOC has not already a team in any gender qualified
  5. Subject to a maximum of 10 teams per gender from the same Continent shall take part.

UNIVERSALITY OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT (UOQT)

Date: June 2020 (exact date and location tbc)

Number of teams: 6 per gender selected as follows:

Six teams are eligible to participate in the UOQT as per the following criteria:

  1. The Host NOC of the UOQT, if not yet qualified in the corresponding gender through the Federation Ranking list or the OQT (see above)
  2. The 5 highest ranked NOCs in the 3x3 Federation Ranking List of November 1, 2019 not yet qualified to the Olympic Games through the Federation Ranking List or the OQT (including in any case the Host Country of the Olympic Games if not yet qualified)
  3. Only NOC (other than Host Country of the Olympic Games) who have not been represented in Basketball (irrespectively men or women) in the past 2 editions of the Olympic Games are eligible to participate in the UOQT
