SINGAPORE (Singapore) – FIBA 3x3 goes green, implementing measures to minimize environmental impact and lead the way in sports sustainability as demonstrated during the recent FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2023.

Players, fans and staff have been making a difference at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2023 through important sustainability initiatives aimed at being environmentally friendly and providing public awareness.

FIBA has made sustainability a significant cornerstone, being the first basketball organization to achieve the international sustainability standard ISO 20121 for a competition last year.

Inspired by the London 2012 Olympics, ISO 20121 is an internationally recognized certificate for sustainable events in a bid for organizations to become more socially responsible and reduce their environmental footprint.

FIBA's targets for the FIBA 3x3 World Tour and the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup include reducing carbon emissions while providing local engagement, welfare, diversity, and material use.

During the Asia Cup, which was held at the Singapore Sports Hub OCBC Square for the first time, there have been practical steps in place to make the event eco-friendlier.

Single-use plastics have been discouraged with players and staff receiving reusable water bottles, while water canisters are available throughout the venue.

To further reduce the event’s carbon footprint, players, officials, and volunteers have been provided with ez-link cards to take public transport to and from the hotel, training, and competition venues. It is estimated that the carbon footprint per return trip for each athlete is about seven times less by train than by car.

Catering for players, officials, and staff includes biodegradable and reusable options, which have replaced single-use plastic cutlery. They have taken a pledge to sustainability, which the wider public is also encouraged to support.

The FIBA Foundation recognizes the importance of sustainable development and is dedicated to supporting initiatives that align with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by using Basketball For Good.
