A look back at the 2022 FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup tournaments

CAIRO (Egypt) - The FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup 2022 held early this month in Cairo saw Egypt clinch with the Women's tournament while Madagascar outpaced their opponents to win the men's event. 

The championships came back to life after a three-year absence and had a total of 16 teams (8 for men and 7 for women).

The entries showed clearly the hunger of the players to return to action and it was a great show of energy, skills and drive.

Entrants in the men's category were Madagascar, Egypt, Rwanda, Tunisia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Morocco, Botswana and Kenya.

Every team came determined and ready to compete, but honor at the end of two gruelling days of competition went to the 3x3 Africa Cup 2017 bronze-medalists Madagascar who won gold this time around defeating hosts and 2019 winners Egypt in the title game 20-17.

Livio Ratianarivo scored 12 points in the final and led Madagascar to gold, while the MVP of the competition, Elly Randriamampionona scored 4 and finished as top scorer of the Africa Cup 2022 winners with 34 points overall.

The 25-year-old Randriamampionona was joined in the Team of the Tournament by the top scorer of the competition and silver medalist Mido Taha (Egypt) and bronze medalist Jean Jacques Wilson, from Rwanda.

Participating teams in the women's competition included Egypt, Tunisia, Madagascar, Kenya, Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo and Morocco.

And, at the end of the two-day event, host Egypt proved to be the best side as they won their second straight 3x3 Africa Cup title defeating Madagascar in the final.

Soraya Mohamed was Egypt's top scorer in the title game with 9 points, while Nadine Mohamed, who was named MVP of the competition, contributed with 4.

Mohamed was joined in the team of the tournament by Madagascar's Rondro Raherimanana and Debora Mayimona, who won bronze with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and finished as the top scorer in the women's competition.

As 3x3 Africa Cup 2022 winners, both Madagascar's men and Egypt's women clinched their tickets to the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023, which will take place in Austria, in Vienna. While Egypt's men and Madagascar's women, as runner-ups, booked their tickets to the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2023 Qualifier in Israel.
