8 Nov 2019

KAMPALA (Uganda) – 8 teams per gender are in the mix to write history by winning the first-ever edition of the FIBA 3x3 U18 Africa Cup in Kampala, Uganda on November 8-10, 2019.

Two years after the first edition of the FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup (in Lomé, Togo), the equivalent for players under the age of 18 is finally launched in the Ugandan capital.

As it is the case in the senior category, Mali will count among the favorites in this first edition. The women’s team will be led by twin sisters Diouma and Saran Berthe. Their main competition will be basketball powerhouse Nigeria, who feature the tallest player in the competition, Grace Ezebilo (6ft 1in, 1.86m). The Democratic Republic of Congo and Egypt will be 2 teams to watch, not to mention the hosts Uganda and Botswana, Burundi and Kenya.

Mali’s roster will be even more impressive in the men’s category. All 4 players have played in FIBA basketball competitions. The loooooooooooong Mohamed Keita (6ft 9in, 2.09m) took part in Mali’s historic silver-medal run at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup this year.

Egypt, Nigeria and Uganda are the biggest threats to Mali’s supremacy in 3x3. Keep an eye on Niger but also Botswana, Burundi and Kenya for a possible upset.
